About event
Raising children in a new country and culture can bring up questions that many of us never had to face in our own childhood.
On the one hand, we’re trying to adapt to the society we live in, while on the other, we want to stay connected to our roots, language, and the culture we grew up with. But our children may experience those things very differently from us. For a child who was born or raised outside Iran, ideas like “home,” roots, the Persian language, traditions, and even some family values may have a different meaning.
These differences can bring up new questions for us: How can we help our children stay connected to the language and culture of the family without turning it into pressure or control? When are we simply seeing a natural generational or cultural difference, and when might it be worth looking a little more closely at our own expectations and reactions?
In this warm and informal conversation, we’ll be joined by Ronak, a psychologist whose main therapeutic approach is Schema Therapy, to talk about parenting in immigrant families and life between two cultures—from the different experiences of parents and children to passing on language, culture, and values without pressure, and how our own experiences and schemas may shape our worries, expectations, and reactions.
This is not a formal lecture. It’s an interactive conversation, with space for our own questions and experiences alongside Ronak’s professional perspective.
